Berens Edu 642 Week 8 Curating and Reflection

Week 8 Curating and Reflection

Part 1: Storify Oak Island

Oak Island Treasure

Objective: To investigate the Oak Island Treasure
  1. I have always been impassioned with a childlike wonder with history, but as I grow older, it has only deepened. I am more eager now than ever before to devour information related to the historical or cryptozoological with the hopes of making meaningful connections, and that is no more true than with lost pirate treasure. The treasure believed to still be buried deep beneath the surface of Oak Island in Northeastern Canada is connected to many historical events and figures, including Marie Antoinette’s lost jewels, Shakespeare’s missing manuscripts, a Maya or Aztec treasure trove, biblical artifacts hidden by The Knights Templar, or Captain Kidd’s nest egg. The resources included below will help to tell the story of the Oak Island Mystery as well as some of the incredible and outlandish theories about what could be, that has allured people like myself since 1795 to uncover what is there, who put it there, when and how it happened, and why Oak Island was chosen.
  2. Visit this website to learn about the basics of oak island history, geography, the culture, and stories connected to it.
  3. STARTING TOMORROW. March 4th at 6AM AST tickets are on sale.tours.friendsofoakisland.com QUESTIONS: tours@friendsofoakisland.com (Don't post here, I prob won't see them)
  4. Here is a link to the friends of oak island an organization that will give you a guided tour around the island and take you back to visit the museum that hold many of the strange items unearthed in searching the island over the years.
  5. "No government to verify that it didn't happen, given the number of shipwrecks." LAST ASSAULT ON OAK ISLAND  http://ow.ly/CVGu309sp11
  6. One of more amazing theories connected to the island is that a treasure ship sailed into a cove on the island and then was purposely shipwrecked. After this the cove was dammed off and flooded to conceal the boat and the treasure, Today this area is a triangular shaped swamp on the island where they continue to harvest planking by using ground penetrating radar, and spikes and a few old spanish gold coins have been discovered with a metal detector.

  8. This is a diagram of the excavated money pit, treasure shaft that the Lagina brothers and their partner who own most of the island are trying to find once more (as it's location was buried and lost to explorers when it flooded). Multiple teams of treasure hunters had attempted to find this money pit over the years and nearly all of them have ended their search in financial ruin or six have actually died in pursuit of this treasure. Most recently brothers Rick and Marty Lagina, the current owners of the island have been searching for ten long years believe they are close to rediscovering the money pit by using historical books, maps, and using modern technology to drill, excavate, and sift through the soil hoping to find treasure or more answers.
  9. This link will take you to the story published in Readers Digest back in 1965 that drew treasure Hunters Dan Blakenship and Fred Nolan to uproot their lives and search for treasure 50 years ago, Rick and Marty Lagina's desire to explore and search for the treasure also come from this article.
  10. The Curse of Oak Island: 3D Map and Timeline (Season 4) | History
  11. This video clip will give you a little detail about the timeframe of exploration that has occurred on the island, explorers have been trying to unearth treasure here for more than 200 years.
  12. The Money Pit Of Oak Island
  13. This video clip explains some of the history behind what treasure hunters and historians call the money pit, or the alleged shaft discovered as early as 1795 with wood timbers unearthed at 10 foot increments and an encoded stone at one hundred feet that many believe hold the key to understanding where or if treasure remains on the island.
  14. Thanks to the Friends of Oak Island Society you can tour the island and the museum to learn more about the history and the theories connected to it's http://www.friendsofoakisland.com/2016/11/25/2017-tour-dates/.

Part 3: Reflection

Nate Berens
EDU 642
Reflection Paper
Dr. Jen Weible

How has your thinking changed this semester about technology use? Education is transforming what we teach, how we teach it, when, where, and how it can be accessed. My most important take away for the use of technology is it can be applied anytime anywhere. Exposure to the various technology tools and application has made me more willing to create student centered lessons, pbl assignments (project based learning), and create lessons accessible to all of my learners (universally designed).
Thinking about the design principle readings from week 1, if you had to select one principle only, which would you take with you into your classroom or work setting? Student centered learning, when they are in the driver’s seat and responsible for their own learning (in a controlled environment) they are engaged deeply and develop meeting. It also embraces that old adage, a good lesson plan is the most effective classroom management tool. When students are interested in what they are learning they pay attention, genuinely attempt the work, and create quality work (when a sample and rubric are provided).
What topics or readings do you feel were important (or not)? All of the topics were important and valuable tools I can use to make my teaching and lesson planning even better.  Infographics can make a very complicated topic understandable by anyone if organized the proper way. Augmented reality is a terrific way to engage learning, (what a great way to view an exploded model of something you are attempting to repair)- extremely touchy and cumbersome but very fun and interactive. Using video to convey information allowed me to experiment with screencasts, where I found they can be a very helpful tool. I learned additional ways beyond Kahoot to use multimedia assessment to check the understanding of my students by using TEDEd, and am looking forward to playing around with Storify some more I could see using it in class for a final project timeline for modern history.
What technologies did you enjoy learning and creating (or not)? My top five in no particular order TEDEd, Screencastify, Aurasma, Piktochart, and Storify. These technologies will help me to differentiate access and the challenge to all of my students.
How do you see your teaching and student's learning changing as a result of this course? Going forward my lesson planning will incorporate more PBL lessons or inquiry based learning with a student centered focus involving technology to build up my students digital literacy skills.

Berens EDU 642 Week 7 Evaluation, Assessment, and Polls.

Berens EDU 642 Week 7 Evaluation, Assessment, and Polls.

      • Lesson Outline in 2-3 sentences how you intend to use this assessment to demonstrate learning for students.
In this lesson students will gain a basic understanding of fundamental problem of economics that drives and motivates us all-scarcity. We must make difficult choices where and how we spend money, use resources, and with our time.  Students will watch the TEDEd video, complete the assessment questions, (and remediate, if necessary) and then apply their knowledge in completing a desert island economics systems project.
      • Write a learning objective: I can analyze economic decision making, and the choices we leave behind, as we investigate scarcity.

    • How could you incorporate project-based learning into your teaching or training, creation of multimedia materials, and learner creation of artifacts? After watching my video, students could apply what the knowledge they have acquired (and add a little more along the way) as they complete a desert island simulation that requires them to start over (as they become stranded) and consider some guiding questions that force their group to make difficult choices in organizing an economic system, to deal with major economic concepts and issues like scarcity, will they operate a free market, traditional economy, mixed economy, or centrally planned economy, and present their findings in student made video.

    • What factors could influence (or not) the success of your implementation? What considerations may be needed? Technology actually working properly. A low tech plan b, in case life happens and we cannot use technology (iPads or WIFI) that day or week.

  • Application:
    • How do the readings from week 1 on design principles for instructional multimedia align with the project? Resonance and visualization. The video I chose to include in this lesson is relatable to most of my students having stumbling across Monsters Inc. as a child or at least knowing of it's premise, the association or example Mr. Clifford is giving will likely resonate with them. The short video also provides a visual example to help a variety of learners.

  • Reflection:
    • How has your thinking changed this week about technology use? Simply put, another door to application and lesson planning opportunity is available to me, which hopefully makes me a more effective teacher.

    • About project based learning in the classroom or workspace? Another tool in the tool belt that for student centered learning, while promoting higher order thinking and authentic assessment.

    • About assessment that utilizes technology? Truly anything can be a formative assessment.

    • What did you enjoy, or not? I had used TEDEd before but have not created a lesson before, it is a really nice tool. I tried using and failed with Micro poll, and another one,as they would not embed into my blog, so I used built in poll feature on blogger to get the job done.
    • How did you grow? More technological prowess and access to tools will allow me to create better lesson crafted to the needs and skills of my students

  • Your artifacts:
    • Embed or link your assessments into your blog post.
        • online video quiz (multimedia assessment)
