Augmented Reality in Social Studies

  • Use in the classroom:
  •  Essential Question: How do mysteries like that of Oak Island relate to modern history and what can they teach us? 
    • Lesson: I created a poster that displays the commonly used five W"s associated with researching a new historical topic (WHO,WHAT,WHERE,WHEN,and WHY).  The students in my high school all have iPad Airs, and are very fortunate to have access to them, I view this activity with the Oak Island mystery a liken to that of a very simple webquest via Aurasma. After making sure all students had access to the necessary tech or were grouped with someone who did. Students would be directed to download Aurasma, and I would model how to sign up and use it (with another sample assignment). Next I would hand out evidence sheets for them to record information related to the five W's and remind them they have one class period to complete the following tasks. Read/watch/visit all of the sources included in the Aura from the poster, record notes, and answer the assessment questions or write a reflection to explain their understanding. Finally,  I would take my class down to the media center or an open space in the school where I have this poster (and others) if I wished to extend the activity or focus on other skills like corroboration several posters containing the five W's on different topics could be plastered around the work area. 

    • Objective: I can use the Aurasma app to explore historical mysteries in digital activity by investigating and contrasting information gathered about the five W's (WHO,WHAT,WHERE,WHEN,and WHY).
    • In a time crunch I only created the one artifact for the assignment. However, now that I know how to design a lesson using AR technology like Aurasma, I an eager to create some inquiry based lessons with it. 
      • Once again this technology would be a great asset or tool for student centered learning and a fun way to grow my students tech savvy. 
      • Secondly, I see great potential for using Aurasma in cooperative learning activities and in stations. Each station could contain a different topic, a different piece of the puzzle or a different source to analyze/compare the information gathered on an evidence sheet a group member (writer) recorded information on. 
      • In researching Aurasma, I found a high school using a bulletin board outside of their department hallway to review/remediate content with Aurasma, and teach procedures/expectations.
      • The time required to create a FUNCTIONAL aura could be an issue, over a long weekend, in a PLC meeting, or when I am planned ahead or over the summer when building curriculum, this is when and where I could see Aurasma being developed as a legitimate and meaningful learning tool for my students.

  • Application:
    • Augmented reality tech can be edutainment and the tasks you design with them could be simple as in my sample or complex. The use of technology like this gets my students excited to learn and a more engaged learner. 
    • AR tech matches up with the best practices discussed in earlier reading from this class regarding inclusion, differentiation, and modalities. 
    • The simple design and EQ of the sample ensure a higher level of student success in the lesson. If I placed ten auras on the poster it might overwhelm them. I focused my design attention towards common language, keep it simple and use language the kids are familiar with (from there I can introduce new terms-when prior knowledge is accessed). 

  • Reflection:
    • I have never used augmented reality technology in class or in my lessons before, largely, because I did not know much about them. I an eager to create some inquiry based lessons with it and use it to use/review expectations.
    • I have an idea of how to use this technology with our PBIS team and hopefully engage our students with their own words, voice recording, and video of them modeling appropriate behavior.
    • AR seemed very complex to me and not really useful with high school students, but after seeing so many teaching integrating this technology into a wide variety of contents and applications, I look forward to further exploration and experimentation with it to have another tool to reach for when planning my next inquiry based lesson or simulation.

  • Augmented Reality Poster (artifact)
    • How the Artifact looks in action?

    • The artifact comes alive providing substance to each of the five basic categories surrounding my artifact, WHO shows an image of the Knights Templar and if you click on it, it leads to more information to help build backgroud. WHAT reveals a video that explores more introduction material about mystery and history of exploration surrounding the island. WHERE shows a map of the island and if you click on it, another map appears illustrating where the island in question in located in relation to Canada's east coast. WHEN shares a GIF timeline of the exploration and discoveries from the island and if you click on the animation, it leads to more inforamation. WHY generates a map of the money pit a vertical shaft that in theory possesses great treasure, and if you click upon the image you will be directed to another website that allows more information about the treasure and Oak Island.

    • This augmented reality activity provides maps, a 3-D graphic timeline, video, and links surrounding the topic: the mystery of Oak Island.
    •  Essential Question: How do mysteries like that of Oak Island relate to modern history and what can they teach us?

Week 4 EDU 642 Video Post

Welcome to my blogpost for week 4. 

In this week's blog I review a video clip from the television show The Office in teaching some basic economic principles and also my first screencast.


  • Lesson Outline: Using content related video clips to help teach economic concepts to my high school students, and an instructional video on how to join our stock market simulator.


  • Learning Objective: I can analyze real life applications of supply and demand in video clips from The Office by comparing them to what I already know. I can use the instructional video to join our classroom stock market simulator. I can create a presentation that teaches or demonstrates economic concepts with video clips from popular tv shows and movies. 

  • How will you incorporate creativity into your teaching, creation of multimedia materials, and student creation of artifacts? I will use video clips from the television show The Office to help my students make real life connections to economic concepts like supply, demand, and prices. Using clips can motivate or engage students and then they can apply what they know by creating a project or presentation that shows other examples of economics in action, from other places they have seen it before.

  • What factors could influence (or not) the success of your implementation? What considerations may be needed? Technological failure. Always have a low tech plan b as a back up in case the technology you plan on using in your lesson is down.

With your lesson idea? Using multimedia like video clips to teach content and encouraging student centered learning.

  • With the digital image technologies in general? The Mayer article from week 1 suggested that when multimedia was used in instruction learning was enriched and students performed better on assessments.

  • Which principles did you intentionally use when designing your lesson idea? General best practices like modeling and then release into a student centered lesson, clear directions and objectives, and a creative lesson that engages all ability levels and supports a variety of learning styles. My students are juniors and seniors ranging from 16-18 years old. Using video to show how a concept like supply or demand works in real life will likely result in more student engagement.

  • How do you feel that this is supporting creativity in the classroom? This lesson is relatable to them, communicates content in conversational language, and places them in charge of their own learning. 

Reflection:
  • How has your thinking changed this week about technology use? About creativity? I learned that my lesson planning closely aligns with the best practices described in the week one readings as well as with the 10 instructional design techniques.

  • What information, facts, processes, or technology stood out in your mind? I  am blessed to have all of the technology and equipment I do in my classroom, and that I am reliant upon technology in my lesson planning because of adaptable it makes lesson planning and how accessible it makes learning for all of my students, and how easy technology makes communicating my lesson (displaying an itinerary for my lesson with the objective with a projector). 

  • Were there tensions that you noticed between the content and design principles for multimedia or between two principles that you used? No tensions, I actually believe multimedia tools make for highly adaptable and flexible lesson planning.

  • What did you enjoy, or not? How did you grow? I enjoyed reviewing the economics video I have included with this post and grew by recording my first instructional video (screencast).

Evaluation 

Video Clip Title: Garage Sale

Audience: High School Economics Class

Purpose: To help teach Supply, Demand, Value, Utility, and Barter.


  • Context: 

I am a high school social studies teacher. This semester I am teaching economics to a junior dominated classroom. My students comprised of juniors and seniors range from 16-18 years old and using video to relate an economic concept to them and make a connection to their lives is key to helping them make the relevant connections they need to “get it”. When they see and hear a potentially foreign economic concept like bartering, demand, or utility played out in a video and spoken to them in a language or mode they understand, there is a higher likelihood of true learning and understanding. My school district and more specifically my high school allows us to use materials in the classroom as long as they are appropriate for network tv. However, if there is a controversial or violent clip of a show or segment of a movie I want to include, I run it by my building administration team along with the purpose, and it is generally approved with the use of a reverse permission slip- a letter to notify parents of what we will watch and when to provide a way to opt out. The slip works this way, if they approve of their child participating in the activity, they don’t need to do anything and if they object, simply respond back to me prior to the date we are doing the activity and an alternative assignment will be provided. The clip would be used to teach an economic concept in an engaging and interactive way.


  • Video Evaulation: 

Garage Sale is a great digital resource to use in teaching all three of these economic concepts; consumer demand, value and usefulness, and bartering. This video in my opinion meets eight or nine of the 10 factors or design principles for multimedia evaluation. It is appropriate, enhances learning in both an easy to understand and entertaining format. The video clip works well as a whole group activity in the classroom (like a warm up), is safe for an educational fair use situation, in fact this clip among several others are frequently used by Kansas State University faculty members to teach economics, providing credibility to our claim.   • Instructional video on how to join Wall Street Survivor Stock Market Simulator



The instructional purpose of this video is to help high school students better understand how the stock market functions in buying and selling stocks. The simulator also helps them see how supply and demand function in real life.

Digital Images and Economics Concepts



  • Use in the classroom or learning environment:
    • Develop a lesson plan IDEA (not a full-blown lesson) for a learning experience that utilizes digital images in the classroom or your work environment.
      • Outline in 2-3 sentences how you intend to use this technology as a support or way to demonstrate learning for students.

Using digital images like MEMES or GIFS can be a great vehicle for active student centered learning.  Technology is a medium and language they know and allows for us to challenge them.

Students will create (Synthesize) a series of Memes, infographics, or GIFs to capture and communicate their understanding of an economic theory from Unit 2 Supply and Demand.

    • How will you incorporate access  into your teaching, creation of multimedia materials, and student creation of artifacts? Think about how images can impact learning as well if they CANNOT be viewed.
I will create a sample that models what to do for my students making this lesson accessible for all learners, and a rubric to create clear expectations.


  • Application:
    • How do the readings from week 1 on design principles for instructional multimedia align:
      • With your lesson idea? Chunking, not overloading, using images to convey meaning, using conversational language, and access to all learners.

      • With the digital image technologies in general? Images or videos can be more effective ways of conveying meaning than spoken word or written text.


    • Which principles do you feel you applied when creating your digital images? I feel like I incorporated most of the best practices discussed in the week one reading most importantly, simple but clear design.


  • Reflection:
    • How has your thinking changed this week about technology use? This topic really resonates with me because technology creates so many opportunities in lesson planning. It crosses ability levels, learning styles, and helps to support access for all learners (a larger print, closed captioning on a video clip… just to name a few). This week my juniors were given the task of creating a kids book to teach economic terms related to Supply, Demand, and Prices. In making their presentation students were asked to explain the economic term like SURPLUS in a real life scenario and include relevant images to help support the storyline. I had a variety of styles, included narration and stories ranging from a lemonade stand, to how all of these ideas fit into Dr. Seuss’s The Lorax. Technology allows teachers to design a challenging lesson with clear instructions and then step back and get out of the way as students dig in, overcome challenges, learn new information, and most importantly create understanding.


    • What information, facts, processes, or technology stood out in your mind? I guess how assistive technology like the use of digital images equalizes opportunity for learning in the classroom. Not only assignments my students with learning disabilities “can do” but will grow from being part of, and further develop their self confidence and skills.


    • What did you enjoy, or not? How did you grow? I especially enjoyed the MEME’s and infographic, but creating the GIF was fun too. I grew from the practice and additionally from this assignment by thinking of ways I could embed this into lesson planning for the future.

  • Choose two or three principles for multimedia instruction that you find compelling in the readings. Briefly summarize your understandings of these principles. How do they work together? What tensions exist between them?
Multimedia can play a major part in earning. Most teachers, including myself use multimedia in nearly every lesson we teach because we know that various images, videos, diagrams, or screencasts can cut down the time we use to introduce the new concepts we wish to teach our kids. Allotting much more time for students to attempt, apply, and construct learning in meaningful or life like activities. The three principles for multimedia that were taken away from this week’s assigned readings were Memory and learning (Mayer),  student centered learning (Wiki) , and application multimedia matrix (Multi)

Mayer Memory and learning
Take a minute to think back to a time where you learned something new. Did you recall an image, a sound, or an experience where you constructed a new understanding of a topic or maybe how you learned the necessary steps of how to complete a new skill. Well it shouldn’t surprise you that we learn and process verbal and visual information differently, according to the author Robert Mayer this concept is called the Dual channel assumption (Mayer, 2009, p. 3). Mayer continues to explain how memory and learning are linked by discussing that we must not overload learners with too much information too quickly. Mayer borrows this concept from Baddeley whom references limited capacity assumption as (people can process only a limited amount of material in a channel at any one time” (Baddeley, 1999), It is worth speculating that motivation is the cause for limited capacity more specifically being actively involved in learning something new can be the key to remembering it come test time. Mayer found that when the students are at the center of the learning, involved in a relevant and active way that links to what they already know they nearly always performed better on a transfer test when multimedia was involved in the lesson, “ meaningful  learning occurs when learners select relevant material, organize it into a coherent structure, and integrate it with relevant prior knowledge” (Wittrock, 1989; Mayer, 2009 p. 3).  Learners performed better on transfer tests taken after the original learning when students had a choice in the multimedia tool they used to create and more importantly this led to deeper learning.

Multimedia in the classroom-
One major challenge teachers face with multimedia is how do I use this stuff. Using multimedia may be complex or arduous, but, with such a broad topic as multimedia it can be applied at varying degrees of difficulty making learning accessible for all,  and in so many different ways that matches up with a preferred learning modality of student doing the work which inevitably will lead to a better product (What is multimedia? n.d.). To me the take away here is, when economic students are learning about the different types of business out there in America instead of just reading about it and answering questions, a more effective way of teaching the same material might be by asking kids to make their own business plans answering the same guiding questions I would have had them complete from simply reading but additionally to dig deeper and create an advertising, slogan, and consider how they might differentiate their brand from competitors in the marketplace., According to the USF: What is Multimedia? knowledge received passively from a lecture or reading is less effective than the inclusion video or images to help learners apply it to their prior knowledge (What is Multimedia?, n.d.). The website also contained a very helpful Matrix that labeled categories by challenge similar to Blooms Taxonomy but went a step further  by describing what  learning goals like those to follow look like;  active, collaborative, constructive, authentic, goal directed run through a range of learning from passive to mastery. Entry, Adoption, Adaptation, Infusion, and Transformation.

Multimedia instruction
The use of multimedia encourages teacher/facilitators to reach for a higher order thinking skill (Instructional Technology 2015, February 6). This can be accomplished by developing complex tasks or in my case assigning complex texts based on how to analyze or synthesize meaning from them relating their topic to something they already know. These student centered learning activities allow flexibility to both the teacher and student, and focus upon a deeper understanding of the concepts. For example if you asked students to collaborate after reading a current events article followed by the task of creating a storyboard to describe  the essence of the article in pictures. Each student will bring a different understanding to the discussion and  come away with different ways the article was relevant to them.
The sentiments by the aforementioned Richard Mayer in his article, Research Based Principles for designing Multimedia instruction and also by the website Multimedia in the classroom are echoed in wikibook’s: Instructional technology page suggesting that multimedia allow teachers to be match a variety of learning styles while offering a central location to house the tools they may use to do their learning (Instructional Technology 2015, February 6). By using the learning management system schoology my fellow teachers and I in the social studies department are able to collect and share resources for our students encouraging communication and collaboration using multimedia.

  • Describe how these principles can be used to support learner-centered approaches to learning, knowledge construction, and meaningful learning.

The Mayer article described using chunking or segmenting when assimilating multimedia in classroom instruction to not overwhelm the students with information a ton of text and video. Additionally, the use conversational language in instruction was suggest to help build relevance and it is important to mention it is believed that spoken word resonates more than words passively read (Mayer, 2009 p. 6).

Multimedia Instruction
Multimedia based lessons are highly adaptable to accommodate multiple intelligences, allow students to take the reins of being responsible for their own learning and create lesson plans that are both authentic and meaningful to learners while at the same time reach for the higher levels of Blooms taxonomy (contrasting and synthesis) (What is Multimedia?, n.d.) .

By blending content and multimedia tools teachers can help build much needed digital literacy skills and simple technological awareness to best equip our learners to be job ready or college ready when the time comes to use them (Instructional Technology 2015, February 6).

  • How could these principles be applied to a specific content area or context in a learning environment in which you teach or develop instruction or training?

As a social studies teacher I am always using digital articles, online sources, video clips, webquests, and a variety of digital templates to drive my student centered instrution. Multimedia is at the center of that lesson planning process to reflect what I know about student learning and memory.
Multimedia can easily mean better more succinct powerpoints used to introduce or teach new concepts while making learning relevant, and collaborative. The various themes of social studies are essential to understanding humanity, behavior, and the perpetuation of civilization but it is difficult to keep my students motivated in what they are asked to learn or the way they are asked to apply what they know. Multimedia can help educators build better lessons that match up with each child’s learning style in a way the is more motivational than the traditional sit and get lecture model. As educators it is common knowledge our kids minds are being wired differently thanks to education including the attention span so I choose to embrace that fact and structure lessons accordingly. It is a department wide practice that we all use powerpoint to project up our objective and lesson itinerary for the day to help focus kids on what we are learning, how we expect them to learn it, and some form of assessment to check for understanding. We all win when teachers fit the content into a platform or activity students can relate to and where they can have a little fun doing it.

  • How has this information changed the way you view instruction and learning?
It is a breath of fresh air than in the era of high stakes testing and harsh teacher evaluation practices that what it is being done in my classroom aligns with the best practices discussed and evidenced by research.  One of directives that I took away was the need for more inquiry based learning and the use of real life (applicable examples) assignments that relate to the world the student knows. Multimedia can also help educators structure lessons that reflect real life scenarios that are relatable as we see with the practice pre-training directions to activate prior knowledge.


  • What concerns or confusion do you have about the material that you read?

Week 2 Padlet Assignment

Welcome to my blog! As an Economics teacher I always find my students looking for alternative sources to learn my content so that is the purpose of my padlet.


Outline: Padlet is a great launch pad for research or an inquiry based learning activity. It can also be a discussion board for students and staff to come together share information,  grow their skills or tools, assess knowledge, or simply collaborate.


Learning Objective: The students will use the padlet to compare and contrast the economic resources to research and then create a presentation about a concept you learned.



Discuss briefly how you will incorporate copyright into your teaching, creation of multimedia materials, and student creation of artifacts?

The research completed for this week’s assignment has deepened my understanding of fair use, creative commons, and how I can use copyrighted materials within the legal boundaries inside of my classroom. I have also discovered how to find truly free and fair to use information in the public domain. Moving forward a stronger understanding of copyright, creative commons licenses, fair use, and the public domain make me a better teacher and more informed multimedia coach or intermediary for my students and within my educational department

With your lesson idea?
The reading directly relate to differentiation, student centered learning, motivation, and multimodal teaching. With the padlet technology in general? The readings from week 1 discussed the need to keep it simple and segment or chunk information because if we hit our students with too much information too quickly we will overwhelm them or lower the odds of them truly learning the concepts we are teaching.

Which principles do you feel you applied when creating your Padlet?
Teaching best practices as the artifacts I have included encourage students to be at the center or their learning, and one of the many different sources included will match up with their learning style to really help them get it.

Reflection:
How has your thinking changed this week? I really like using multimedia sources, video clips, political cartoons, images, and simple powerpoints to express and relate the content of what I am trying to teach in a form that will be clearly understood. I also gleaned a wealth of information of where to find free sources in the public domain, in the creative commons, and truly what fair use means.


What information, facts, processes, or technology stood out in your mind?
Multimedia is the most effective way of getting my message out to my students, it is the main vehicle I use for lesson planning and communication.

Were there tensions that you noticed between the content and design principles for multimedia or between two principles that you used?
Not really because the technology is so adaptable and the internet has so many wonderful resources to use if you know how to search for them.

What did you enjoy, or not?
I always enjoy learning new information or enhancing my understanding of topics like copyright as they preserve my innocence and help me teach my students how to properly use information they find on the internet.

How did you grow?
I learned much more about fair use and public domain than I did before.
